Assaulting the Police.

By chantal

At the Police Court on Monday Walter Martin labourer of 2 Mount Pleasant was charged with assaulting the police.

P.C. Noel said on Sunday evening he saw the prisoner on the pavement in Snargate Street surrounded by a crowd of soldiers. He told Martin to move on but he refused to do so saying he would “upset the witness.” On his requesting the man for the third time to move Martin struck him on the face. With assistance he then arrested Martin.

Chief Constable Fox informed the Bench that the prisoner who was certainly paralysed a little, exaggerated a good deal and thus often succeeded in securing the sympathy of the public. There was a gentleman in court who witnessed the affair and assisted the Constable.

Mr George Hatton Jun. then came forward and said that he and a friend witnessed the affair and he himself fetched assistance, his friend in helping the constable was struck in the eye by a soldier.

The Mayor having sentenced Martin to six weeks hard labourer thanked Mr. Hatton for helping the police and for his attendance in Court.
