Begging Nuisance.

By chantal

Yesterday (Thursday) Walter (Hoppy) Martin who had been in trouble on several occasions was charged again at the Dover Police Court with begging in Dieu Stone Lane. P.C. Taylor deposed to seeing the prisoner stop three gentlemen in Dieu Stone Lane and asking for “a copper towards a night’s lodgings.” Witness spoke to Martin about it and he denied begging. Witness arrested him and he became very violent on the way to the station.

Prisoner and his wife lived in Adrian Street and “obtained a living by making lace.”

Mr Vidler; Are you willing to go to the Workhouse?

Prisoner No sir why should I go there?

Mr Vidler You will be well cared for there and have a proper wash.

Prisoner I always wash every morning. (Laughter)

Sentence of 14 days was passed.
