Man and Woman drunk at 6.30 a.m.

Mary Ann Young and George Frederick Hobbs were charged at the Police Court on Tuesday with being drunk and obstructing the footway in Beach Street.

P.C. Hicks said that at 6.35. that morning he was on duty in Beach Street and when he saw prisoner’s lying on the footway he got them to their feet. Both were drunk the woman being worse than the man. He told them to go home. After going a little distance the woman fell down again. Witness picked her up and as Hobbs was not capable of taking care of the witness obtained the ambulance and conveyed her to the station. Hobbs said he did not make the woman drunk.

Chief Constable Fox said the bad feature of the case was that prisoners were drunk early in the morning. The woman who was of a very loose character lived with Hobbs at a lodging house at Finnis Hill. Chief Constable Fox said Hobbs had about 19s on him and the woman declared it was her money. Some dispute arose as to the payment of the fine and eventually both prisoners elected to go to prison for 14 days in default of payment.
