Stealing Bacon

By Beata

Mary Pilcher was charged with stealing a piece of bacon to the value 2s 6d from the shop of Mr Rubie of Biggin Street.

Police Sergeant Barton said he was sent for on Saturday evening by one of Mr Rubie’s men who told him that every Saturday evening someone was in the habit of stealing eggs butter etc. from their shop and they had suspected the prisoner of being the delinquent and set a watch on her the result of which was that she was seen to take the piece of bacon produced.  When he got to the shop they told him the woman had just gone up the street.  The young man in court walked up the street with him and pointed out the prisoner whom he took in charge and whom Mr. Rubie’s men charged with stealing the bacon.

The young man had given the prisoner in charge told the Bench that Mr. Rubie did not want to press the charge against her and the Magistrates discharged her with a caution.

No order was made as to the bacon found upon the prisoner.
