Fire at Limekiln Street.

“January 1900 brought alarm to Limekiln Street, where Mr. Cummings’ residence fell victim to a sudden fire. Swift action by the local brigade, aided by the hose reel from Elizabeth Street, quelled the flames by 3:35 a.m., preventing a larger catastrophe in our bustling town.”

The Superintendent reported that an alarm of fire by telephone message was received at 3-5 on Wednesday the 17th inst. from 32 Limekiln Street occupied by Mr. Cummings. The hose reel from Elizabeth Street was sent for and the Superintendent and nine firemen attended. The fire was extinguished about 3-35 a.m. The second floor was extensively damaged and the ground floor damaged by fire and water and the ceiling destroyed. The building was insured. The origin of the fire was a beam in the chimney that had caught alight.
